When you’re just starting, don’t overcomplicate it. Begin with what you already know. Write down your skills, passions, and interests. For example, are you great at budgeting? That could be a personal finance course. Love baking vegan cupcakes? A recipe eBook might be your thing.


I started my digital product business way back in 2019, I have zero experience in sales and marketing, and no business background. Selling digital products was a new world to me.


I don’t even have skills to offer, but I’m passionate about creatives most specifically video editing. I’m far away from an expert video editor. However, my coach told me to go with YouTube Marketing as I have a background in video content creation.


Was I successful? Well, I’ve launched my 1st ebook and beta class about YouTube Marketing. Got a few students. But eventually, I did not pursue that niche. 


I failed in my 1st year in the digital product business.


They say 82% of successful entrepreneurs build businesses in niches they’re already passionate about. This may be true but passion alone is not enough. 


My passion for video editing helps me stay consistent and engaged but I don’t have proficiency when it comes to YouTube Marketing.


My YouTube subscribers at that time were only less than 50 people. I don’t have experience in helping businesses generate leads and sales through YouTube. That’s why I failed.


Well, that was 6 years ago.

Finding the right niche or knowing how to identify profitable product idea can feel overwhelming, especially if you think, “I don’t have any skills or expertise.” But here’s the truth: everyone has something valuable to offer, even if you don’t see it yet.


I was a corporate employee, and I worked as a call center agent in a local repair service company. I was earning enough to live daily.  I wanted to earn extra income to support my family. But every time I thought about starting a digital business, I got stuck. “I don’t have any skills,” I told myself. “forget about digital business, stay where you are — full-time employee.”


One day, I attended a free online webinar about building a digital product business. I learned the three simple questions to discover my niche:


  • What problems do I know how to solve?

  • Who would benefit from my knowledge or skills?

  • Are there existing products in this area, and are they selling well?


So I grabbed a notebook and started listing all the things I'm doing every day. Read travel blogs, edit videos to post on my social media, give advice to my friends when it comes to tech stuff, learn YouTube, and draw animated cartoon characters. At first, these didn’t seem like “skills” to me. But then I asked myself: What problems do I solve regularly?


I realized I was excellent at tech stuff, especially tools and software for online business. Every week, I created video tutorials about how-to videos on YouTube. I thought, could other aspiring entrepreneurs struggling with tech benefit from this?


Next, I asked: Are there existing products in this area?


I searched online and found that digital product businesses were indeed popular. I also saw aspiring digital entrepreneurs asking for tips in Facebook groups about how to use this software to build an online business. This gave me the confidence that there was a market for my idea. That's my startup story of how to identify profitable product idea.



Validating Your Idea Before You Create


Now, here comes the validation of your product idea. To tell you, one of the biggest mistakes aspiring digital product entrepreneurs make is jumping straight into creating a product without knowing if anyone will buy it. Validation is like testing the waters before you dive in. And trust me, I learned this the hard way.


A few years ago, when I was just starting my digital product journey, I had what I thought was a brilliant idea: a detailed eBook about YouTube Marketing for online business. I poured weeks into writing, designing, and formatting it. When I finally launched, I sat back and waited for the sales to pour in.


Nothing.


Not a single sale.


I felt crushed. All that effort and nobody was interested. What went wrong?


I realized later that I had skipped the most important step: validation. I hadn’t taken the time to find out if business owners wanted YouTube hacks or if they would pay for an eBook about it. If I had asked them first, I might have discovered they preferred templates or coaching instead.


After that experience, I decided never to skip validation again. When I came up with my next idea— that January 2024 when I decided to launch Affiliate Marketing For Beginners using Systeme.io— I took a different approach as summarized in the image below.

To my surprise, I got over 10 responses in just a few hours! Many people said they struggled with starting a high-ticket affiliate marketing business. After the 5-day free challenge, I’ve got my 1st P750 sales. I don’t have an intention to sold the recordings but they want to have the recordings so I sell for very low prices at P250.

Choosing a niche based solely on passion feels natural—after all, if you love something, it should be easy to build a business around it, right? But here’s the hard truth: passion alone doesn’t pay the bills. To succeed, you need to find the intersection between what excites you and what people are willing to pay for. When I started brainstorming my first digital product, I was so excited to create something that matched one of my greatest passions: video editing. I love creating video content, editing videos, and uploading to YouTube. Naturally, I thought, What better niche than Video and YouTube marketing?


I spent months creating the online course called "YouTube Marketing for Business Owners: Get Leads and Sales using YouTube Organic Traffic" I poured my heart into it, creating modules on video content creation, YouTube Tutorials, landing pages, promotional posts and so much more. It was my dream project.


But when I launched, the results were heartbreaking.


Barely anyone bought it. The few sales I made came from close friends and family who likely bought it to support me, not because they needed it. My “dream niche” turned out to be a nightmare for my wallet.


After this experience, I decided to approach my next idea differently. This time, I started with my skills and passions but also prioritized market research. I asked myself:


  • What skills do I have that people actually struggle with?

  • What problems are people asking for solutions to?

  • What are they already spending money on?


I realized that, aside from video editing, I was skilled at designing high-converting sales funnels—a technical but valuable skill I had developed over the years. It wasn’t as “fun” as video content creation, but I saw that many aspiring entrepreneurs were struggling to understand and implement effective funnels on their online businesses.
